Is it right for you?

Is manual right for you?

Manual could suit you if you want to learn how to choose gears and control the clutch yourself. If moving away, stalling or changing gear makes you nervous, tell your instructor so those skills can receive the practice they need.

Would you rather learn without manual gear changes? Explore our automatic lessons before choosing. Automatic driving lessons in Reading.

What you will work on

  1. Find your footing with clutch control

Build a feel for moving away and stopping, then practise coordinating the pedals. You can work through difficult moments without pressure to master everything at once.

  2. Choose gears while observing

Practise matching gear choice to the situation while keeping your attention on the road. Build a routine for approaching junctions and responding to changing traffic.

  3. Bring the skills together

Combine vehicle control with positioning, manoeuvres and forward planning. Your lesson plan develops with your experience rather than assuming every learner progresses at the same speed.
